Shelby County Accident; Jacob Buman, 19, Lost His Life In Tragic Motorcycle Accident
The Harlan community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 19-year-old Jacob Buman, whose life was cut short in a tragic motorcycle crash Wednesday evening in Shelby County. His sudden passing has left family, friends, and neighbors in shock, as they struggle to come to terms with the loss of someone so young.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred around 7:25 p.m. along Shelby County Road M-16, just north of Shelby. Investigators say Jacob was riding a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle northbound when it collided with the rear of a 2010 Apache 715 field sprayer. The agricultural vehicle, driven by 37-year-old Luke Applegate of Shelby, was in the process of making a left turn into a driveway at the time of the crash.
Authorities report that the impact forced the motorcycle off the roadway, where it came to rest in a nearby ditch. The sprayer stopped in the driveway. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Jacob was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries. The driver of the sprayer was not hurt.
In the wake of the tragedy, an overwhelming sense of grief has spread through Harlan. Jacob was just beginning to shape his future—a young man with ambitions, plans, and a life full of possibility ahead of him. Those who knew him are now left holding onto memories of his presence, reflecting on moments that now carry even greater meaning.
