Jose A. Perez Obituary – A fatal three-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 in Troy Township, Illinois has left one person dead and another hospitalized.
Illinois State Police say the crash happened shortly after 5 a.m. on April 26 in the southbound lanes near milepost 254.5, just north of Black Road. The collision involved three vehicles and resulted in the death of 21-year-old Jose A. Perez of Shorewood, who was pronounced at the scene.
A 20-year-old woman was also injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Following the crash, all southbound lanes of I-55 were shut down for several hours, with traffic diverted at U.S. Route 30. The roadway was reopened around 11:20 a.m.
Authorities have scheduled an autopsy through the Will County Coroner’s Office, and the crash remains under investigation as officials work to determine what caused the collision.
The cause of the fatal three-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 has not yet been determined, as investigators continue to examine the evidence.
To understand what happened, authorities are reviewing factors such as skid marks, vehicle damage, road conditions, and statements from witnesses. These details help piece together how the crash occurred and whether any driver actions—like speeding, distraction, or impairment—played a role.
Determining fault in multi-vehicle collisions can be complicated. Investigators must assess how each vehicle was involved and whether one or more drivers contributed to the crash. Legal professionals often review police reports and additional evidence to help establish liability.
Experts explain that if a crash is caused by negligence—such as reckless or unsafe driving—it may be considered a wrongful death case. In Illinois, families may have the legal option to pursue compensation for their loss, including financial and emotional damages.
While insurance companies may begin contacting those involved soon after the crash, a full determination of responsibility typically takes time as investigators complete their review.
For now, officials have confirmed that the crash remains under investigation, and no official cause has been released.
